Having kids changes our lives dramatically. No longer do we have lazy Saturday mornings in bed to watch TV. Instead, we have soccer games, recitals, and other events to attend. Our time together with our partner must be more intentional than ever before. Try to spend at least an hour each week with your spouse and child. Quality time with your spouse and child is important, so make sure to put your stress aside and spend the time with your children.
When communicating with your children, use a friendly tone of voice and use consequences for inappropriate behavior. Praise your child if they demonstrate appropriate behavior. Be a role model for your child and teach them by example what they should do. If you want to have fun with your child, set aside time for fun activities. It’s a good idea to set some limits, but you should also let them choose some of their own activities. The important thing is to make them feel that their behavior is valued and respected.
When children talk back, parents should praise their child and show their appreciation for it. Parents should try to see situations from their children’s perspective and form mental pictures. Parents should use a gentle tone of voice to redirect their children. Parents should also be good listeners, making eye contact, and getting down to their level. It is best to encourage open-ended conversations and make sure that your child understands what you’re trying to convey.
